DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball remains as the only undefeated East Division team in the USA South Conference standings following the Cougars' 3-1 win over Salem College on Tuesday night in the Grant Center.
Averett (7-9, 4-0 USA South) rebounded from a 25-23 loss in the opening set to win the next three by scores of 25-21, 25-15 and 25-16 over Salem (7-6, 3-1 USA South). Four matches into league play, the Cougars sit alone atop the East Division standings.
Salem took advantage of Averett's 10 attack errors in the opening set. Yet, the Cougars still led 23-20 before Salem rallied to steal the opening game. From there, though, Averett found its groove in the second set. The Cougars hit .231 with only five attack errors in that frame en route to tying the match, 1-1. Averett carried that momentum into the third and fourth sets as the Cougars eased to wins in each. Averett hit .343 in the third set and .294 in the fourth set.
Freshman
Lauren Montren finished with a double-double of 15 kills and 14 digs, while sophomore Sarah shropshire led the Averett attack with a team-best 16 kills and six blocks. Freshman
Morgan Barnes also had double-digit kills with 11 to go with four blocks and three service aces. Sophomore
Zamyiah Mangum had a team-high 21 digs, while senior
Harper Scollo and junior
Myka Patterson each added 12 digs. Junior
McKenzie Miller, who was named the USA South Conference Player of the Week on Monday, had 47 assists and nine digs.
Averett returns to action on Thursday when the Cougars play host to conference foe Mary Baldwin University at 7 p.m. in the Grant Center.
