LEXINGTON, Va. — The Averett University volleyball team lost a non-conference battle at Washington and Lee University, 3-1, on Thursday night.

Following a 25-13 loss in the opening set, Averett (10-11) stormed back to dominate Washington and Lee (16-5) in Set 2. The Cougars built an early 10-4 lead and strolled to a 25-13 win to even up the match. In that second set, Averett totaled seven blocks in a dominant performance at the net.

However, the Generals slipped away from the Cougars' grasps over the next two sets as Washington and Lee sealed the match with wins of 25-17 and 25-18.

Sophomore Sarah Shropshire led Averett's attack with 13 kills and junior Myka Patterson had a team-high 19 digs. Junior McKenzie Miller finished with 27 assists and 11 digs, with sophomore Zamyiah Mangum adding 11 digs. Mangum and senior Madison Dadez each finished with four blocks as well for the Cougars.

Averett has a six-day break before returning to its home court against conference rival Meredith College on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
