DANVILLE, Va.
— The Averett University men's soccer team earned its second straight win in USA South Conference play, beating Methodist University, 1-0, for its second consecutive shutout on Senior Night on Saturday night on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Averett (5-9, 3-6 USA South) got on the board first when sophomore
Erik Blick scored with a header off a corner kick from sophomore
Ty Michelson in the 31st minute of play. After the first half of play, the shot count was even at 10 apiece with Methodist (3-8-1, 1-7-1 USA South) as the Cougars held a 1-0 lead.
Averett had a handful of shot opportunities in the second half, but primarily played defense late as it preserved the 1-0 lead and held on for its third conference win of the season.
As part of Senior Night,
Ian Kirk and
Matthew Merhoff were honored prior to the start of the game. In goal, Merhoff played 10 minutes and made one save.
Blick's goal was his fourth of the season and second in as many games, as his game-winning goal against William Peace University on Tuesday was also scored on a header, while Michelson's assist was his second of the season. In goal, junior
Colton Dutchess was credited with the win and combined shutout with Merhoff, as he made three saves and cut off a handful of other scoring opportunities for the Monarchs.
The Cougars return to action on Oct. 19 when they travel to Brevard College for a road conference matchup.
