Women's soccer drops hard fought tilt with Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va. — The Averett University women's soccer team dropped a hard fought 2-0 decision to Mary Baldwin University on the road Wednesday afternoon in USA South Conference action.

Averett (0-17, 0-7 USA South) would hold Mary Baldwin off the board in the opening 45 minutes of play to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the half.

However, Mary Baldwin (5-11, 1-6 USA South) broke the stalemate in the 60th minute on a goal by Annie Ammons to take a 1-0 lead.

The Fighting Squirrels added an insurance goal seven minutes later when Ammons assists on Elena Guy's score to give Mary Baldwin a 2-0 advantage.

Sophomore Morgann Dills recorded nine saves for the Cougars, while sophomore Josefine Sundbom recorded a team-high two shots.

Averett closes out the 2019 season on Saturday when it hosts William Peace University at 1 p.m. as the Cougars will recognize seniors Emily Meador and Kirsten Clancy prior to kickoff.
