DANVILLE, Va.
— In the second annual Cougar Open, the Averett University wrestling team took second place overall with a score of 124 on Sunday in the Grant Center.
Individually, Averett had 11 wrestlers place in the top six, having at least one wrestler place in eight of 10 different weight classes, six of which made it to the semifinals and three made it to the championship match in their bracket.
At 141, junior
Brandon Woody collected a major decision, a decision and a pin to advance to the championship bout. In the championship, Woody earned a 6-2 decision victory to claim the title.
In the 125-pound weight class, junior
Sam Braswell racked up two tech falls and a decision victory to advance to the championship match. However, he lost in the championship match to earn the second-place finish. In addition to Braswell, freshman
Julian Holley placed sixth in the 125 bracket after collecting a major decision and decision victory on the day.
At 133, sophomore Joey Jones notched two tech falls and an overtime win to advance to the championship bout. In the championship, though, Jones lost by decision to claim second place in the tournament. Also placing in the 133-pound weight class were sophomore
Easton Halliday, who placed third after pinning two opponents along the way, and freshman
Darius Parker, who placed sixth after advancing to the semifinals earlier in the day.
In the 149-pound bracket, junior
Caleb Harmon added a pin and two decision victories to take fifth place on the day.
At 157, after dropping his first match, sophomore
Tony Blackman battled back, notching a decision victory and three tech falls to take fifth place in his bracket.
In the 165-pound weight class, freshman
Isaiah Deck collected a major decision and decision victory to advance to the semifinals. He went on to take sixth place in his bracket.
At 184, freshman
George Moseley tallied three pins and a tech fall to advance to the semifinals and take third place in his weight class.
The final Averett wrestler to place was sophomore
John Bishop, collected two pins at 197 to take fourth place in his bracket.
The Cougars return to action on Nov. 16 when they head to the Southeast Regionals to take on Huntingdon College at 2:45 p.m. and Millikin University at 6:15 p.m.
