FERRUM, Va. — Seniors
Ravyn Johnson and
Brooke Carthon each posted double-doubles as Averett University women's basketball held on late to earn a 66-54 victory over rival Ferrum College in non-conference action on Monday.
Averett (6-3) jumped out to an 18-0 run to begin the first quarter of play, before carrying a 30-12 advantage into halftime.
However, Ferrum (0-9) rebounded to open the second half of play, winning the third quarter 14-13, before outscoring the Cougars 28-23 in the fourth quarter.
The Panthers pulled within nine points off Averett with just under five minutes to play, but clutch 3-pointers by seniors
Kiara Smith and
Samantha Tecson, along with important free throws down the stretch propelled the Cougars to the win.
Johnson finished tied with a team-high 13 points with Carthon, while pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds and adding four assists.
Carthon finished with 11 boards and two assists, while Smith added a season-high 11 points.
Sophomore
Camryn Lunsford added nine points and two assists, while freshman
Briana Payne finished with eight points and five rebounds.
The Cougars are back in action on Wednesday when they host N.C. Wesleyan College in USA South Conference action beginning at 4 p.m.
