ROANOKE, Va. — The Averett University women's lacrosse team collected their second win of the 2019 season as the Cougars defeated Hollins University, 18-3.
Freshman
Courtney DeLone got the offensive onslaught started in the second minute of the game with her sixth goal of the season. Averett (2-1) went on to collect three more goals over the next three minutes of play before DeLone registered two more to push the Cougar lead to 6-0 with 23:36 left to play in the first half. At this point, Hollins (0-1) called a timeout to regroup.
However, Averett would not let their foot off the accelerator as the Cougars would register five more goals over the course of the next 5:01 of game time to take a commanding 11-0 lead.
DeLone was credited with three of these goals for Averett as the Edmond, Oklahoma, native did all of her scoring within the first ten minutes of the match. Hollins would get on the board in the 15th minute, but it was not enough to slow down Averett as the Cougars recorded four more goals before the end of the half for the 15-1 advantage.
Out of the break in action, sophomore
Gabbie Porter scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second half to stretch the Averett lead to 17-1. Freshman
Meghan Eamma tallied the last Cougar goal of the day during the 42nd minute of play and Hollins would tack on two more to their total before the end of the game to run the final score to 18-3 in favor of Averett.
Averett forced 19 Hollins turnovers and 11 failed clears to help spur the offensive outbreak. In addition, the Cougars had the advantage in ground balls (31-25) and draw controls (11-7).
Senior
Alixis Roccia, sophomore
Elizabeth Peasley and freshman
Hannah Mae Ayers all finished with a hat-trick while Ayers and Roccia also each tacked on three assists.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, March 6, when they travel to Randolph College for a non-conference tilt at 3:30 p.m.
