LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Averett University women's lacrosse team won their second consecutive match on Wednesday afternoon as the Cougars defeated Randolph College, 18-5.
The first ten minutes of the match were a back-and-forth affair as each team tallied two goals within that timeframe. Senior
Alixis Roccia got the scoring started for Averett (3-1) before sophomore
Elizabeth Peasley tallied a goal of her own.
With the score tied at two, the Cougars would rattle off three consecutive scores to take a 5-2 lead with 14:41 remaining in the first half. Peasley was credited with two of those strikes to register her third hat-trick of the season. Randolph (0-3) would cut the Cougar lead to one with about ten minutes left in the opening period via two straight goals of their own.
However, the Cougars would respond in a defiant manner as Averett scored five unanswered goals over the final 9:48 of the first half. Roccia pitched in three of the goals to own five heading into halftime while freshman
Courtney DeLone scored her 12th of the year and freshman
Adriana Perez tallied the first of her collegiate career. The Cougars owned a 10-4 edge during the break in action.
Averett would not slow down in the second half as the Cougars outscored the Wildcats 8-1. In the second frame, Averett out shot Randolph (16-10) while owning the advantage in shots on goal (11-7). The offense maintained to be spread out as there were four different Cougars who did the scoring in the second half. This intensity in the Cougars attacking third did not leave much room for Randolph to get any rhythm moving forward as Averett cruised to an 18-5 victory.
Peasley and Roccia each finished the game with seven goals. Roccia also tacked on two assists which brings her career total to 20 and moves her within one of tying the career program record held by Darcie Jones (2005-07).
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, March 9, when Averett travels to take on Guilford College. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
