Baseball drops opening weekend doubleheader against Washington and Lee

DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University baseball team dropped their opening weekend doubleheader to Washington and Lee University by finals of 11-2 and 7-3 as game two was called early due to darkness.

Game Two:

Following a scoreless inning by freshman Collin Clark, Averett (0-2) got on the board early in the first inning as senior Kyle Vidano laced a triple over the head of the Generals left fielder and later scored on junior Chase McKinney's sacrifice fly to left.

Washington and Lee (2-0) evened the score in the top of the second inning when Matt Whitely singled to center field driving in Bryce Burnette. The Generals added two more runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.

However, the Cougars pulled within one run when junior Andrew Lancaster hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Vidano on a bang bang play at home plate. Averett added another run when senior A.J. Hart scored from third base on a wild pitch.

The Generals added runs in both the fifth and sixth inning to take the lead back at 5-3, before adding two insurance runs in the seventh to pick up a 7-3 win.

Clark took the loss for the Cougars, going 2.1 innings while striking out three batters, while Chase Fleming earned the victory for the Generals entering in relief and striking out three over two innings of work.

Offensively, Averett was paced by Vidano who finished 1 for 1 with two runs, while Lancaster, McKinney and freshman Brandon Hatcher each added hits.

Game One:

Washington & Lee got things started by rattling off two runs in the first inning. Then, McKinney blasted a home run over the left field wall for Averett's first run of the 2019 season.

The Generals answered in the second inning by batting in four runs to take a commanding 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the second. Senior Matt Tuggle scored on an error to make it a 6-2 game heading into the third inning.

However, after two scoreless innings by both teams, Washington & Lee scored five runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 11-2 lead.

Sophomore Tyler Butler pitched well in relief for the Cougars scattering four hits over 2.1 innings and striking out one. While, freshman Josh Adkins finished the game for Averett on the mound as the righty dazzled in relief, striking out two batters in an inning of work.

Averett returns back to action Sunday as they travel to Lexington, Va. for a single 9-inning game against Washington and Lee with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
