BEREA, Ky. — Averett University softball's bats came alive, the the program's single-game record for home runs as the Cougars swept a road doubleheader against Berea College on Friday afternoon. Averett won the opener 8-0 in five innings before cranking six homers as a team for a 13-4 win in five innings to finish the series.
Averett (6-1) set the single-game team home run mark in the top of the fifth as freshman
Kaity Sullivan crushed a three-run blast to all but put Game 2 out of reach for Berea (1-3).
Down 2-1, Averett's dinger fest began in the second inning for the Cougars as juniors
Nicole Cauthen and
Brianna Harris hit back-to-back solo homers. Later in the inning, junior
Kaitlyn Aherron hit the first of her two home runs with a two-run shot to right field, giving the Cougars a 5-2 advantage.
After tacking on two more runs in the third, Aherron added a solo homer in the fifth, and freshman Anna Thompson added her first career homer with a two-run blast to left-center field later in the inning to extend Averett's lead to 10-2. That set up Sullivan, who knocked her first career home run to break the record of five homers in a game held by three teams.
Aherron and Cauthen each went 3-for-3 in Game 2, with Coleman and Harris each added two hits as the Cougars pounded 14 hits as a team.
Freshman
Hannah Thompson (3-0) earned the win, striking out three while allowing two runs on three hits over three innings. Sullivan finished the final two innings in the circle, striking out four while giving up two runs on three hits.
Averett's bats were also hot to start the day. Although they didn't hit a homer in Game 1, the Cougars had 12 hits as a team, including 3-for-3 efforts by Cauthen and freshman
Erin Rankin.
Averett opened with a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI single by Rankin. Junior
Casey Cook upped the Cougars' lead to 2-0 the next inning with an RBI double to right-center before Averett added two more runs in the third to go ahead 4-0. Run-scoring doubles by Rankin and Coleman in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth helped Averett end the game early.
Junior
Taylor Bailey (3-0) remained undefeated in the circle, combining with Sullivan to shut out the Mountaineers while allowing a combined three hits. Sullivan had five of the Cougars' six strikeouts.
Although Averett and Berea are both members of the USA South Conference, the games did not count as league contests in the standings because they crossed over divisions.
Averett continues crossover play on Saturday with a noon doubleheader at Maryville College.
