DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University baseball dropped a non-conference home game to Bridgewater College after the Eagles overcame a two-run deficit to score 14 runs over the final four innings for a 17-5 win Tuesday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.
Down 3-0, Averett's offense came alive in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman
Jason Maggs led off with a single to right-center and then stole second base. Senior
Corey Wall and freshman
Dawsyn Hock smacked back-to-back RBI doubles to pull the Cougars within 3-2. After a single by sophomore
Martin Nicolay, junior
Nick Winston continued his hot tear over the past five games with an RBI double, scoring Hock to tie the game. Freshman
Nate Tuck drove in Nicolay with the go-ahead run and junior
Cody Jones added a sacrifice fly to give the Averett (3-15) a 5-3 advantage.
That lead held until the top of the sixth when Bridgewater (4-10) plated five runs on three hits, two walks and a hit by pitch to take an 8-5 lead. The Eagles added four runs in the seventh and five more runs in the ninth to pull away.
Winston, who is riding a five-game hitting streak, finished 3-for-4 to lead Averett's offense, which had nine hits.
Averett also got four scoreless innings of relief pitching from sophomore
Tanner Bradshaw, who threw the second, third, fourth and fifth frames. Freshman
Avery Spicer also threw one scoreless inning in relief.
Averett travels to Roanoke College for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday.
