DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's tennis team earned a decisive 9-0 victory over Hollins University for its first win of the spring portion of the season at the Averett Tennis Courts on Thursday afternoon.
Averett (2-1) combined for a 24-1 score in three doubles matches, as the pair of senior
Heidi Sarkkinen and sophomore
Eleanor Crane started things off with an 8-0 victory at the No. 1 slot. At No. 2 doubles, freshmen
Inka Zeilstra and
Kristina Hedelt earned an 8-1 win, while the duo of freshman
Rainey Townsend and senior
Ashley Thornton secured the third doubles point with an 8-0 victory at the No. 3 spot.
This dominant play continued into singles play, as Sarkkinen earned a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the No. 1 slot to get it started. Crane actually had the closest match of the day, but still came away with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles. Zeilstra kept it going with a 6-1, 6-0 win. From there, Hedelt earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory, Townsend swept her opposition, 6-0, 6-0, and Thornton closed the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
It will be a fairly quick turnaround for the Cougars, as they travel to Sweet Briar College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
