DANVILLE, Va. — In the team's USA South Conference home opener, the Averett University men's lacrosse team fell to Pfeiffer University, 21-6, on Sunday on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Coming off its first win in program history on Friday, Averett (1-6, 0-2 USA South) showed some of that fire from the victory early on, as sophomore
Joonas Mattila scored with 4:49 left in the first quarter to cut Pfeiffer's (4-4, 2-0 USA South) lead to 4-3. The Falcons then scored three goals to end the first quarter before sophomore
Mason Foy answered with his second goal of the day to make it a 7-4 game at the beginning of the second quarter. However, Pfeiffer then scored 13 unanswered goals to effectively put the game away.
Offensively, Foy led the team with two goals and three shots on goal, his fifth goal in the past three games. Mattila and freshmen
Mike Michaud and
Wesley Turner had two points apiece, as they all scored one goal and added one assist each. Turner's goal was the first of his career, while freshman
Tyler Moodie also added his first career goal.
Meanwhile, freshman
Sam Garrett led the team with nine ground balls and added a caused turnover. Freshman
Parker Corbett and sophomore
Rafael Walker were next up with six and five ground balls each, respectively. In goal, sophomore
Jacob Shriver made 10 saves.
The Cougars are back at home for the final game of a four-game home stretch as they host Randolph College on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
