Peasley becomes all-time career goals leader in women's lacrosse victory at LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga. — The Averett University women's lacrosse team won their third consecutive match on Sunday as the Cougars beat LaGrange College, 21-5.

Averett (6-2, 2-0 USA South) did the most of their damage in the first half of play as the Cougars held a 15-3 lead at the halftime break. Sophomore Elizabeth Peasley recorded the first goal of the match in the second minute to give Averett the 1-0 lead. LaGrange (0-4, 0-4 USA South) tallied a goal of their own a minute later to level the score at one. From here, though, the Cougars really pulled away for good from the Panthers as Averett registered 12 unanswered scores to take the 13-1 lead with 11:42 left in the first half. These 12 goals came from six different goal scorers with freshman Hannah Mae Ayers being credited with four of them.

Both sides would trade a goal before Peasley collected the hat-trick to make it 15-2 in favor of Averett with 4:01 left in the opening half. This goal by Peasley not only extended the Cougar lead but also helped her become the all-time career goals leader in program history, passing Darcie Jones (2005-07) who tallied 106 in her career.

Peasley knows how monumental of an accomplishment this is and credits those around her for helping her towards this achievement.

"This is a really big accomplishment to have been able to break this record because of the program restarting at Averett just last year," Peasley said. "I can say full heartedly, that I would not have been able to do this without my teammates, coaches, and family being by my side throughout this journey."

LaGrange would tack on one more goal to their total to cut the Averett lead to 15-3 going into the break in action.

The Panthers scored their second goal of the second half at the 18:32 mark to trim the Averett lead to 16-5. This would be the last goal that LaGrange would tally, though, as the Cougar defense shut the door for the rest of the match to keep the Panther's offense at bay. In addition, Averett would finish strong on the offensive end as the Cougars recorded five goals over the final 18:32 to win the match, 21-5.

Peasley, Ayers and senior Alixis Roccia each had five goals on Sunday. For Ayers, this marks a career-high while for Roccia this is her fifth hat-trick of the season.

Averett celebrates Senior Day on Saturday as the Cougars host William Peace University. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
