DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's lacrosse team fell 19-1 to Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon.
Shenandoah (3-1) did not waste anytime getting into their offensive attack. The Hornets spent much of the first quarter in their attacking third and it paid off as Shenandoah recorded six goals while holding Averett (0-3) scoreless throughout the first frame. The Hornets were able to hold a majority of the possession during that period as they owned the advantage in face-offs, ground balls and successful clears.
The second quarter was a more of a back and forth affair as Averett began to test the Hornets keeper more and more throughout the quarter. The increasing pressure would pay off for the Cougars in the last minute of the first half. After an unsuccessful clear and turnover by Shenandoah, sophomore
Jacob Shriver picked up the ball and found freshman
Mike Michaud down the far sideline. Michaud would receive his pass and move his way up the field before firing his shot past the Hornets keeper top shelf to cut the hornet lead to 11-1 heading into halftime.
The Cougars struggled to carry this offensive momentum into the second half as Shenandoah would go on to win, 19-1.
Michaud's goal marks the first of his collegiate career while Shriver made 17 saves in net.
Averett opens up conference play on Saturday, March 9, as the Cougars travel to take on Huntingdon College. Game time is set for 2 p.m. ET
