GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Averett University baseball team dropped its series opener against Greensboro College 13-3 Friday evening in USA South Conference action.
Averett (3-18, 2-8 USA South) would take a 1-0 lead early in the first inning when sophomore
Tanner Bradshaw hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield that plated junior
Chase McKinney.
The Cougars added another run in the top of the third inning on a single by junior
Cody Jones that drove in freshman
Nate Tuck.
However, Greensboro (7-11, 4-5 USA South) benefitted from a five run bottom of the third inning and a four spot in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-2 lead.
Averett would get a run back in the top of the fifth inning to cut into Greensboro's lead at 9-3, but the Pride added a run in the sixth and three in the eighth to extend their lead to 13-3.
The Cougars finished the evening with nine hits as juniors
Andrew Lancaster and
Cody Jones each added two hits, while juniors
Nick Winston, McKinney, sophomore
Tucker Majetic, Tuck and Bradshaw all added hits.
Averett returns back to the diamond tomorrow evening for Game 2 against Greensboro beginning at 6 p.m.
