DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's and men's lacrosse teams will participate in their annual Team Molly game Saturday afternoon on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium to raise awareness for Ewing Sarcoma.
"We are all very excited for our second Team Molly game," said
Kelly Ryan, the head women's lacrosse coach at Averett. "We are happy to honor Molly and all she did as a person and women's lacrosse player. Our players have involved Averett University SAAC to help collect donations and spread awareness about Ewing Sarcoma and about Molly throughout the week and on game day. We appreciate our player's efforts and everyone's support as this a very meaningful event in the lacrosse world."
Team Molly is a foundation set up to honor Molly, a 2011 graduate of Buffalo State College where she played lacrosse for Averett Director of Athletics
Meg Stevens.
"The Team Molly game for me is extremely personal," Stevens said. "Molly played for me for five years and it means a lot that both of our lacrosse programs have really taken on the cause that Molly and her teammates, my kids wanted to start for her and it goes back to a great cause. We lost Molly way to young and I really appreciate that our kids are involved and interested in helping and continuing to do more cancer research."
In 2011, Molly was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a somewhat rare and fast growing bone cancer. It typically presents in childhood or early adulthood between the ages of 10 and 20.
The goal of Team Molly is to raise awareness for the rare disease, as donations raised go to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York for research and hopefully a cure.
The women open the Team Molly weekend at 1 p.m. against Salem College, while the men will play Methodist University at 4 p.m.
