DANVILLE, Va.— In the program's second annual Team Molly game, the Averett University women's lacrosse team extended their win streak to six with a 26-4 defeat of Salem College on Saturday.
Â
Averett (9-2, 5-0 USA South) wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as the Cougars scored 10 goals in the first 10 minutes of play. Sophomore
Elizabeth Peasley scored four goals while junior
Abby Taylor and freshman
Courtney DeLone each recorded the hat-trick during this time frame.
Â
This scoring barrage gave Averett all the momentum they needed which helped them maintain control. The Cougars added seven goals to their total before the end of the half to take the 17-0 lead over Salem (1-10, 0-5 USA South) heading into the break in action.
Â
The second half was more of a back and forth affair as both sides traded scoring chances. Salem held the edge in draw controls (8-5) during the second half while Averett had the slight advantage in ground balls (17-14). The Spirits were able to collect four goals in the second half while the Cougars scored nine. Freshman
Olivia McPherson and senior
Rosa Morales each scored the first goals of their collegiate careers. Sophomore
Lindsey Bateman also got in on the scoring affair as the Raleigh, North Carolina, native registered the brace in the second half for her career-high. Â
Â
With under a minute left in the match, Peasley was sitting on 11 goals on the afternoon which had tied the USA South Conference record for most goals scored in a game. The Wilmington, North Carolina, native earned a free position opportunity with about 30 seconds remaining and scored on the ensuing attempt for not only her 12th goal of the match but also the USA South Conference record. In addition to her 12 goals, Peasley also collected an assist during the first half to give her 13 points in total on the day. This sets the program record for most points scored in a game which was previously held by Vanessa Jordan (2006-07) who recorded 10 points against N.C. Wesleyan College on April 8 during the 2006 campaign.
Â
This score by Peasley was the last of the match as Averett went onto win 26-4. At the end of the match, the Cougars owned the lead in ground balls (49-20) and draw controls (22-9) which led to a lot of time spent in their attacking third.
Â
Taylor finished the match with a career-high six goals.
Â
Averett stays home to prepare for Meredith College who comes to town on Wednesday. Game time is set for 7 p.m.Â
