STAUNTON, Va. — The Averett University women's tennis team notched two more conference wins with a 9-0 sweep in Game 1 and another 9-0 victory in Game 2 of the day over Mary Baldwin University on the road on Wednesday.
With the wins, Averett (8-4, 4-1 USA South) is now on a three-match winning streak, all coming against conference opponents. Additionally, these sweeps over Mary Baldwin (0-12, 0-7 USA South) were the third and fourth 9-0 victories the Cougars attained this season.
In Game 1, Averett started off doubles play strong, only surrendering one point through three matches. The duo of senior
Heidi Sarkkinen and sophomore
Eleanor Crane started off with an 8-0 win in No. 1 doubles, while the freshmen tandem of
Inka Zeilstra and
Kristina Hedelt grabbed an 8-0 win in No. 2 doubles before the team of freshman
Rainey Townsend and senior
Ashley Thornton notched an 8-1 win in No. 3 doubles to secure the three doubles points.
In singles play, No. 21 Sarkkinen started things off with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 1 singles. To keep the momentum going, Crane, Zeilstra and Hedelt all grabbed 6-0, 6-0 wins in No. 2, 3 and 4 singles, respectively. To clinch the sweep in Game 1, Townsend and Thornton earned 6-1, 6-0 wins in No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively.
In Game 2, the Cougars kept the momentum going as all three doubles teams -- Sarkkinen and Crane, Zeilstra and Hedelt, and Townsend and Thornton -- each earned 8-0 victories.
Averett's strong performance continued into singles play, as the teams opted to play one eight-point set in each match. Sarkkinen kicked off this format with a 8-0 win at the No. 1 spot, while Crane, Zeilstra, Hedelt and Townsend all followed suit by notching 8-0 victories each. Thornton then secured the second dominant sweep of the day with an 8-1 win in No. 6 singles.
The Cougars return to action on Thursday at 3 p.m. to host Guilford College in non-conference action.
