DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's tennis team won their fourth consecutive match as the Cougars swept Guilford College, 9-0.
Senior
Heidi Sarkkinen and sophomore
Eleanor Crane also won their fourth straight match at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-0. The freshmen pair of
Inka Zeilstra and
Kristina Hedelt were victorious at No. 2 doubles for the fourth time in a row as well as they defeated their opponents, 8-1. Senior
Ashley Thornton and freshman
Rainey Townsend were able to keep Averett (9-4) undefeated with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. The Cougars carried the 3-0 lead over Guilford (2-13) into singles play.
Hedelt collected a 6-0, 6-0 straight-set victory at No. 4 singles to move the Cougars to within one win of clinching the match. Sarkkinen, who is ranked 21st in the nation and 11th regionally, came in and closed things out for Averett as the she won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
Crane and Zeilstra both won 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 and 3 singles respectively before Townsend won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Thornton completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday as Methodist University comes to town for a conference tilt. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
