DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University softball lost its opener 11-4 to Greensboro College, but storms halted Game 2 with the Cougars ahead 2-0 in the third inning on Friday, forcing play to be suspended.
Averett (25-13, 9-6 USA South) and Greensboro (22-12, 8-6 USA South) will resume play on Saturday at noon.
Prior to the heavy rain and storms rolling in, Averett had built a 2-0 lead in Game 2. Freshman
Hannah Thompson crushed a solo homer to left-center in the first inning, and junior
Taylor Bailey's RBI triple in the second inning gave the Cougars a two-run advantage when play was stopped in the top of the third with no outs and a runner on first for Greensboro.
In between games, Averett honored seniors
Taylor Hodges and
Essence Pulliam as part of the Senior Day ceremonies.
In Game 1, Greensboro got off to a hot start in the second inning. The Pride had two aboard with one out when Lilly Baucom's RBI single made it 1-0. After Thompson got a strikeout for the second out, Greensboro got another RBI single to up its lead to 2-0. Two Averett errors extended the inning as the Pride tacked on three more runs.
Down 5-0, Averett answered in the bottom of the second. Junior
Casey Cook's RBI triple to left-center scored freshman
Zamyiah Mangum, who had led off with a double. The Cougars cut it to 5-2 moments later on junior
Kaitlyn Aherron's RBI single through the right side.
After Thompson scored on a passed ball in the fifth to inch Averett within 5-3, Greensboro took advantage of three hits and two more errors to add three runs to its lead, which grew to 8-3. Although Averett got one run back in the bottom of the sixth on a Greensboro fielding error, the Pride added three more runs in the seventh to pull away.

Breanna Murphy each had two hits in Game 1.
