DANVILLE, Va. — In its final home game of the regular season, the Averett University men's lacrosse team fell to Brevard College, 18-5, on Senior Day on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
Sophomore
Joonas Mattila, who was honored for Senior Day because he graduates early in December, scored the first goal of the day for Averett off the assist from sophomore
Rafael Walker. Freshman
Mason Foy then scored the next two goals of the game, with freshman
Ballard Earley assisting on one of them, to give Averett a 3-1 lead. This gave Foy 16 goals on the season, breaking the program's single-season scoring record previously set by
Keshawn Downing, who had 15 in the team's inaugural season.
However, Brevard (6-6, 3-3 USA South) then bounced back with 15 unanswered goals to effectively put the game out of reach. Freshman
Mike Michaud ended the scoring drought for the Cougars late in the fourth quarter, while freshman
Ashton Neymour scored his first collegiate goal with 22 seconds left on the clock.
Defensively, freshman
Sam Garrett led the team with eight ground balls and three caused turnovers after coming into the game ranked in the top five in the conference in each of those categories. Sophomore
Miska Granlund was next with five ground balls and one caused turnover, while Walker had four ground balls and three caused turnovers and Mattila logged four ground balls and two caused turnovers. In goal, sophomore
Jacob Shriver made 15 saves, while freshman
Bryce Stewart made five saves.
