Women's tennis defeats Greensboro on Senior Day

Box Score DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's tennis team capped Senior Day with a 9-0 victory over Greensboro College on Tuesday.

Senior Heidi Sarkkinen and sophomore Eleanor Crane won their seventh straight match at No. 1 doubles as the pair was victorious 8-0. Averett (11-5, 5-2 USA South) won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles by 8-1 score lines to give the Cougars the 3-0 edge heading into singles play. The freshman duo of Inka Zeilstra and Kristina Hedelt competed at No. 2 doubles while senior Ashley Thornton and freshman Rainey Townsend played at No. 3 doubles.

Zeilstra worked quickly at No. 3 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 to extend the Averett lead to 4-0. Sarkkinen would clinch the match for Averett with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. This is the seventh consecutive victory for Sarkkinen who is ranked 16th in the region.

The Cougars would go on to sweep Greensboro (6-5, 5-4 USA South) with wins in each of the final four singles matches. Crane won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles before Townsend beat her opponent at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-1. Hedelt and Thornton each won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 and No. 6 singles respectively. For Hedelt, this triumph was her seventh in a row in the fourth slot.

Women's tennis welcomes Virginia Wesleyan University to the Averett Tennis Courts on Friday for their home finale. Doubles are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
