Women's lacrosse falls to Meredith in conference championship game

LAGRANGE, Ga. — After advancing to the USA South Conference Tournament Championship game for the first time in program history, the No. 2-seeded Averett University women's lacrosse team fell to the No. 1-seeded Meredith College, 26-1, in the title game on Saturday.

Meredith (17-4, 11-0 USA South) jumped out to a 8-0 lead over Averett (14-5, 9-2 USA South) in the first 5:06 of the game and didn't look back from there, extending the lead to 13-1 at halftime. The Avenging Angels added 13 more goals in the second half to effectively pull away and clinch the USA South title from there.

Individually, senior Alixis Roccia scored the lone goal for the Cougars on a free position attempt, and also led the team with three shots and three caused turnovers. Sophomore Elizabeth Peasley led the team with four draw controls, while freshman Adriana Perez logged a team-high three ground balls. In goal, sophomore Breanne Sawall made 14 saves.

Additionally, Averett had four representatives on the USA South All-Tournament team. Freshman Hannah Mae Ayers was selected at attack, Roccia made it at midfield, senior Kaitlyn Barbour was selected as a defender and Sawall represented the team at goalkeeper.

This will be a conclusion of what was the best season in program history to date for the Cougars. The team's 14 overall wins and nine conference wins were both program-highs, and the tournament win on Friday and appearance in the conference championship game were also firsts. Additionally, a handful of individual records were also broken, such as sophomore Elizabeth Peasley breaking the career scoring record with 156 goals and 177 points, while Ayers broke the career assists record with 49 in just her first season.
