Women's tennis bounces back with conference win over Salem

Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Averett University women's tennis team snagged its second conference win of the season with a dominant 8-1 victory over Salem College on the road on Saturday.

Averett (6-4, 2-1 USA South) started off hot with two wins in doubles play, including the duo of senior Heidi Sarkkinen and sophomore Eleanor Crane grabbing an 8-1 victory in No. 1 doubles and the freshman team of Inka Zeilstra and Kristina Hedelt earning an 8-3 win in No. 2 doubles. The only point for Salem (4-7, 1-2 USA South) on the day came in No. 3 doubles.

The Cougars then secured all six singles points for the third time this season, as No. 21 Sarkkinen started things off with a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 1 singles. In the No. 2 spot, Crane earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory, while Zeilstra notched a 6-3, 6-1 win in No. 3 singles. In No. 4 singles, Hedelt won, 6-0, 6-1, while fellow freshman Rainey Townsend won 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot. Senior Ashley Thornton then capped things off with a 1-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory in No. 6 singles.

Averett looks to keep this momentum going as it takes on Pfeiffer University on the road on Sunday at 1 p.m.
