Foy, men's lacrosse break scoring records in loss to William Peace

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — The Averett University men's lacrosse team lost to William Peace University, 20-9, on the road on Sunday evening in USA South Conference action.

Freshman Mason Foy scored four goals on the day for Averett (1-10, 0-5 USA South), which broke the program's single-game scoring record. Additionally, the nine goals the Cougars scored as a team were the most in a game in program history, the previous being seven. Averett has seen steady improvement as the season went on, as this marked the fifth time in six games where the Cougars scored at least six goals in a game. However, the offensive explosion from William Peace (5-8, 2-2 USA South) proved to be formidable, as the Pacers took a 6-2 lead after one quarter of play and didn't look back.

Foy's team-leading four goals on the day gave him 14 on the season, just one shy of the season-high mark Keshawn Downing set last year after he scored 15 goals in the team's inaugural season. Additionally, it marked the seventh consecutive game where he scored a goal. Freshman Parker Corbett was next up with two goals on the game, while sophomore Rafael Walker and freshmen Tyler Moodie and Sam Garrett added the other goals for Averett. Sophomore Joonas Mattila led the team with two assists on the day, while Moodie freshman Wesley Turner also added one assist each.

Defensively, in addition to scoring his first collegiate goal, Garrett led both sides with a career-high 12 ground balls and added two caused turnovers. Sophomore Miska Granlund led the team with three caused turnovers, while sophomores Will Merritt and Andrew Leeper combined to win 12 faceoffs. In goal, freshman Bryce Stewart made a career-high 10 saves in playing for a little over half the game.

Averett returns home to celebrate Senior Day as it takes on Brevard College on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m.
