DANVILLE, Va. — In its 2019 season opener, the Averett University men's soccer team fell to Guilford College, 3-1, on Friday on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
It was a hard fought game throughout the evening, as there were three goals traded by both teams in a five-minute span later in the first half. Guilford (1-0) struck first with 15 minutes left in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Averett (0-1) answered less than a minute later as sophomore
Owen Story scored his first collegiate goal on a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1. However, the Quakers struck again with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half to take a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
The Cougars saw plenty of good looks and scoring opportunities in the second half, including two goals that were wiped out by penalties, but things simply did not go their way as they didn't score for the rest of the game. Guilford then sealed the deal with a breakaway goal with less than two minutes remaining in the game.
Averett held a 13-10 advantage over Guilford in shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore
Baste Endresen led the team with three shots and two shots on goal, while freshman
Edvard Akerman added three shots with one being on goal. In addition to scoring his first collegiate goal, Story added an impressive defensive save for the Cougars.
Averett returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. as it travels to Randolph-Macon College.
