DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's soccer team had its winning streak halted with a 4-0 conference loss to Maryville College on Sunday on Daly Field and Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
It was a defensive struggle at the beginning, until Maryville (4-2, 2-0 USA South) struck first in the 31st minute with a goal scored from inside the box by Kai Meittinen. The Scots' Meittinen scored again quickly off a throw in that slipped through the defense and he finished it off for his second goal of the day to lift Maryville to a 2-0 advantage in the 33rd minute.
At the half, Averett (3-4, 1-1 USA South) trailed 2-0. The Cougars had several looks in the second half, but Maryville added two more goals — both by Jace Burchfiel.
Averett junior goalkeeper
Colton Dutchess had 10 saves in goal.
The Cougars entered the day on a three-match winning streak having shut out their previous three opponents.
Averett returns to action on Saturday at LaGrange College.
