Volleyball wins third straight with home victory over Lynchburg

DANVILLE, Va.  In its first home match in over two weeks, the Averett University volleyball team extended its winning streak to three with a decisive 3-1 victory over the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday night.

Sophomore Zamyiah Mangum led Averett (3-7) with a career-high 16 kills with a stellar .400 hitting percentage to go along with 15 digs to lock up the double-double. Sophomore Sarah Shropshire also set a career-high with 14 kills and a .357 hitting percentage. Junior McKenzie Miller led the team with 37 assists, 18 digs and five service aces to also notch a double-double. Lastly, senior Madison Dadez and freshman Morgan Barnes tacked on six total blocks each.

Set 1 was competitive as Averett jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Lynchburg quickly closed the gap. The Hornets then led by as many as seven before the Cougars' comeback effort fell just short with Lynchburg (7-3) taking the first set, 25-21.

Averett trailed 5-1 early in Set 2 before mounting a 7-1 run thanks to three blocks from Dadez during that momentum shift. The Hornets tied it at 9-9 before the Cougars closed the set on a 16-6 run to win Set 2, 25-15, and tie the match at 1-1.

Set 3 started off competitive as well until Averett pulled away late with a 9-1 run to eventually win the set, 25-20, and take a 2-1 lead on the match. Set 4 was also back-and-forth, with the scored tied at 16 before Averett closed the set on a 9-1 run to seal the win.

The Cougars look to keep the winning streak going as they host Maryville College and Bridgewater College for a tri-match on Saturday, facing Maryville at 11 a.m. and Bridgewater at 3 p.m.
