— Two Averett University women's tennis players will be vying for flight championships on Sunday following Saturday's start of singles play at the Methodist University Fall Invitational.
Freshman
Nakia-Lee Goodall advanced to the finals of Flight 6 while sophomore
Rainey Townsend advanced to Sunday's final in Fight 7. They will play their championships at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively, on Sunday.
Goodall opened by beating Methodist University's Hannah Higgins 6-1, 6-1. She then topped Methodist's Catherine Smith in a battle, 6-1, 3-6, 10-7.
Townsend began her Flight 7 play by edging Methodist's Sydney Bird 4-6, 6-0, 14-12. She then advanced over Roanoke College's Sophie Bartholomaus, 6-1, 6-1.
In Flight 1, Averett freshman
Fabienne Bachmann dropped her opening match to Division II Barton College's Marissa Stevenson 4-6, 6-3, 10-4. She rebounded with a consolation win over Methodist's Allison Himes, 6-0, 6-2. Also in Flight 1, junior
Eleanor Crane fell to Division II University of Mount Olive's Lina Romero, 6-1, 6-0. She then loss a tough consolation match to Roanoke's Jesse Kennedy 6-7 (7), 6-2, 12-10.
Junior
Louise Hovhammar won her opening Flight 2 match over Roanoke's Lucy Collins, 6-4, 6-3. However, she fell to Mount Olive's Ece Yksel, 6-2, 6-1.
In Flight 3 action, sophomore
Inka Zeilstra lost to Mount Olive's Dieke Schipper, 6-0, 6-0. Zeilstra bounced back with a win over Methodist's Bri Rado, 7-5, 7-6 (2).
Freshman
Alejandra Garcia lost her opening Flight 4 match to Methodist's Alex Pratt in three sets. Pratt won 7-5, 4-6, 10-1. Garcia won her consolation match over Methodist's Natalie Collins 7-6 (3), 6-1.
