GREENSBORO, N.C.
— In the final game of a three-game road stretch, the Averett University men's soccer team fell to Greensboro College, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon.
Averett (3-7, 1-4 USA South) got on the board first as sophomore
Kellen Fees scored in the 23rd minute off an assist from sophomore
Baste Endresen. However, Greensboro (5-4-1, 4-1 USA South) answered with two goals late in the first half to take a 2-1 lead heading into the halftime break.
The Pride kept this momentum going as it scored two more goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to take a 4-1 lead. The Cougars then rallied later in the half, as sophomore
Owen Story scored on a penalty kick in the 68th minute and sophomore
Erik Blick added another goal in the 73rd minute to cut the gap to 4-3. Averett couldn't get anything else going, though, as the comeback effort fell just short.
Story's goal gives him a team-high four on the year, making him 4-4 on penalty kicks. Meanwhile, Blick's goal was his second of the season and Fees' goal was his first of the season. Junior
Colton Dutchess made nine saves in goal.
The Cougars return to action on Oct. 1 at 5 p.m. to host N.C. Wesleyan College in a doubleheader with the women's soccer team.
