Late goal helps Emory & Henry edge Averett in women's soccer

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University women's soccer battled 83 scoreless minutes with Emory & Henry College before the visiting Wasps put in what turned out to be the deciding goal for a 1-0 non-conference Wednesday night on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.

Tied 0-0, Emory & Henry (1-0-1) got the break either team was looking for in the 84th minute. Kelci Horner's line-drive shot was saved by sophomore Morgann Dills, but the rebound found Graysen Barrs, who fired it into the back of the net in the scramble.

Emory & Henry outshot Averett (0-3-0) by a 16-10 margin, including 10-5 in the second half.

Dills had four saves in goal for the Cougars. Senior Emily Meador led Averett with five shots, including on goal late in the first half.

Averett travels to play in the Piedmont College Invitational held Sept. 7-8 in Demorest, Georgia.
