DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's basketball team dropped a 67-58 decision to USA South Conference East Division leader William Peace University on Sunday in conference action.
Averett (8-6, 2-3 USA South) jumped out to an early 16-7 first quarter lead, aided by sophomore
Camryn Lunsford's two 3-pointers.
William Peace (13-2, 6-0 USA South) capitalized on a strong second quarter to pull within three points of the Cougars at halftime, as Khadijah Daniels posted nine of her game-high 25 points in the opening half.
However, the second half would belong to William Peace and Daniels exploded helping the Pacers open up their first lead in the third quarter with a 23-15 run, and shot well from the free throw line down the stretch to close out the fourth quarter 17-13 for the 67-58 victory.
Lunsford lead all Averett scorers with 19 points, while grabbing seven rebounds. Additionally, sophomore
Genesis Weiters finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Freshman
Courtney Scott continued her strong freshman season as the guard finished with nine points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals, while senior
Brooke Carthon added nine points.
Averett finished with a 50-36 rebound advantage and benefitted from 21 offensive rebounds.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Staunton, Virginia, for a battle with Mary Baldwin University at 6 p.m.
