Brooke Carthon moved into sixth all-time on the Averett University scoring list, passing Mette Scheiman as women's basketball held on for a hard fought 51-41 victory over Mary Baldwin University Wednesday evening in USA South Conference action.
Averett (9-6, 3-3 USA South) battled Mary Baldwin to an 11-11 tie following the opening quarter, but finished the half on a 21-6 run to take a 32-17 lead into halftime, capped off by sophomore
Camryn Lunsford's steal with seconds remaining that was passed into the hands of freshman
Courtney Scott who finished off the fast break play.
Mary Baldwin (9-7, 4-4 USA South) made the most of a low scoring third quarter as the Fighting Squirrels limited the Cougars to just three points, while finishing the quarter on a 9-3 run.
However, clutch free throw shooting down the stretch in the fourth quarter, allowed the Cougars to hang on for a 51-41 victory on the road.
Lunsford finished with a team-high 13 points, while pulling down seven rebounds and finishing with two assists.
Carthon finished tied with sophomore
Genesis Weiters with a game-high 10 rebounds, equaling Weiters' six points on the evening.
Additionally, freshman
Courtney Scott finished with six points, six rebounds and a team-high three assists, senior
Ravyn Johnson finishe with nine rebounds and fellow senior
Samantha Tecson finished with her top performance on the year with five points and six rebounds.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday with they battle Pfeiffer University on the road at 2 p.m. followed by a bout with Methodist University on the road Sunday at 2 p.m.
