DANVILLE, Va. — Sophomore
Courtney Scott posted a career-high 21 points to help the Averett University women's basketball team hold on for a 78-73 victory over Meredith College in USA South Conference action on Tuesday.
Meredith (7-14, 3-9 USA South) opened up a 4-0 advantage early in Tuesday's conference showdown, however, Scott came alive from the floor, helping the Cougars finish the first quarter on a 12-2 run, aided by sophomore
Genesis Weiters' four blocks in the opening frame.
Averett (13-6, 7-3 USA South) closed out the opening half with an 18-11 second quarter run to take a 30-17 lead into the break as Scott finished with 12 of her 21 points in the first half.
The Cougars opened the third quarter by putting up a 20-point advantage over the Avenging Angels, however, Meredith rebounded to win the quarter 23-20 and put the pressure on Averett in the fourth quarter.
Senior
Ravyn Johnson finished the night with a 12-point and 11 rebound double-double, while sophomore
Camryn Lunsford added 14 points and a game-high five steals.
Senior
Brooke Carthon added 11 points and four steals, moving past Averett Hall of Famer Shannon Yopp for fourth-place on the all-time scoring list.
Additionally, senior
Kiara Smith posted a game-high five assists as the Cougars finished with a season-high seven made 3-pointers and a 48-36 rebound advantage.
Averett returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Greensboro College at 2 p.m. in USA South play.
