DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Guilford College 16-3 in non-conference play on Wednesday evening.
Guilford (2-0) jumped out to an early lead in the first half, netting three early goals before senior
Abby Taylor broke the Cougars scoring drought of an assist from junior
Haley Boardway.
Averett (0-1) added a second goal in the first half with just over 10 minutes to play as junior
Elizabeth Peasley got in on the scoring action, pulling the Cougars within 6-2 of Guilford.
However, the Quakers closed out the first half on a 4-0 scoring run to take a 10-2 advantage into the half and added five goals in the second half, before Peasley struck for her second goal of the evening to cut the deficit at 15-3.
Sophomore
Courtney DeLone finished the night with a team-high four ground balls, while sophomore
Emily Eby played well in net for the Cougars, racking up eight saves and three ground balls to go along with two forced turnovers.
The Cougars return to action on Feb. 25 when they host Roanoke College at 4:30 p.m. on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
