BLUEFIELD, Va. — In what was a tight match throughout the day, the Averett University men's tennis team topped Bluefield College, 4-3, on the road on Saturday.
Averett (1-0) started off by claiming the key doubles point, as the team of freshman Jorge Figueroa and junior Stan Martherus got the 6-4 win in No. 1 doubles while the duo of Simon Levinsson and sophomore Fabian Howding won by default in No. 3 doubles to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead over Bluefield (1-2).
After Howding won by default in No. 6 singles, the Rams got wins in the top three singles spots to take a 3-2 lead. Then, freshman Evgeniy Bogdasaryan got the victory in No. 5 singles, 6-1, 7-5, to tie the match at 3-3. That's when Levinsson won the deciding match in No. 4 singles, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1), overcoming a 5-3 deficit in the third and final set to win it by tiebreak and seal the match victory for Averett.
The Cougars have a quick turnaround, coming home for a match on Feb. 23 against Hampden-Sydney College at 1 p.m.
