DANVILLE, Va. — In its first home match of the season, the Averett University men's tennis team topped Hampden-Sydney College, 7-2, at the Averett Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon.
Averett (2-0) started off with two wins in doubles play to take a 2-1 lead over Hampden-Sydney (0-3), as freshman Jorge Figueroa and junior Stan Martherus claimed an 8-5 win in the No. 1 slot while junior Simon Levinsson and sophomore Fabian Howding earned an 8-2 win in the No. 3 spot.
This success continued into singles play, as Howding coasted to a 6-0, 6-1 win in No. 6 singles while junior Thomas Woodcock claimed a dominant 6-2, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 slot. Figueroa then clinched the team's victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win in No. 1 singles while freshman Evgeniy Bogdasaryan also won his match handily in the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-1. Martherus then had the closest match of the day in No. 2 singles, winning 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 in what was the final match.
The Cougars return to action on Feb. 29 when they travel to Randolph College on Feb. 29 at 1 p.m.
