Ragland beats nationally ranked heavyweight as wrestling dominates Alderson Broaddus, Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Averett University wrestling team earned two wins in a tri-meet on the road on Saturday, beating Alderson Broaddus University, 41-9, in the first dual and Southern Virginia University, 38-12, to close out the day.

Dual 1

Against Alderson Broaddus, No. 5 junior Sam Braswell wrestled the closest match of the day, getting a takedown in overtime for the 6-4 sudden victory to give Averett (9-8) a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Joseph Jones then built off that momentum with a 17-0 win by tech fall, before juniors No. 9/8 Brandon Woody and Caleb Harmon each won by forfeit to give the team an early 20-0 edge.

After a close loss by decision at 157, freshman Isaiah Deck turned the tides back in Averett's favor at 165, pinning his opponent to extend the lead to 26-3. The Cougars lost by pin at 174 but freshman George Moseley won by forfeit at 184 to make it a 32-9 lead.

Freshman Kowan Lee then wrestled a close match at 197, getting a late takedown in the final seconds to win by decision, 5-3. Freshman Trent Ragland then won by injury default after getting two takedowns at heavyweight to conclude the dual with a 41-9 victory. Additionally, this was Averett's first win over a Division II opponent in program history.

Dual 2

Against Southern Virginia, Averett started off with a 6-3 lead after Braswell won by forfeit and a loss by decision at 133 pounds. The Cougars then won four straight bouts, as Woody won by pin, Harmon won by tech fall, 16-0, sophomore Tony Blackman won by forfeit and Deck won by pin against the sixth-ranked wrestler in the region to give Averett a commanding 29-3 lead.

Following a loss at 174 pounds, Moseley collected his 17th pin of the season to extend the lead back out to 38-9. After a loss at 197, Ragland won the match of the day, getting reversals early in both the second and third period against the No. 9-ranked Nico Ramirez to win by decision, 8-3. With the win, Ragland improved to 17-4 on the year.

The Cougars return to action when they take on Ferrum College on the road on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.
