Scott’s career-high 28 points powers women’s basketball past East Division leader William Peace

RALEIGH, N.C. — Freshman Courtney Scott poured home a career-high 28 points in Averett University women's basketball's 80-68 victory over William Peace University, who entered Saturday's showdown undefeated in USA South Conference play.

Scott came out on fire Saturday, finishing with 15 points in the opening quarter as Averett took a 27-14 advantage following the opening frame and never trailed after the 6:39 minute mark.

Averett (16-7, 10-4 USA South) followed up a strong first quarter, by taking a commanding 41-24 lead into the half and opening up as much as an 18-point advantage in the second quarter as Scott tied a career-high with 21 points in the opening half.

William Peace (20-3, 13-1 USA South) put the pressure on the Cougars coming out of the break, chipping into Averett's lead with a 25-17 third quarter win, but a strong fourth quarter from sophomore Camryn Lunsford and senior Rayvn Johnson helped preserve the 80-68 triumph.

Scott finished the afternoon with both a career and game-high 28 points, adding eight rebounds and shooting an impressive 5-6 from behind the 3-point arc.

Johnson and Lunsford both added 14 points apiece, while Johnson collected a game-high nine rebounds and Lunsford dished out a game-high five assists.

Additionally, sophomore Genesis Weiters finished with eight points and eight rebounds, while senior Brooke Carthon added nine points and four assists.

Averett finished the afternoon with six blocks, three coming from Weiters and two by senior Kiara Smith who finished with seven points.

The Cougars controlled a 42-34 advantage on the boards and tied a season-high mark of 80 percent from the free throw line.

Averett will look to make it four in a row on Wednesday when it travels to Rocky Mount, North Carolina for a 7 p.m. battle with N.C Wesleyan College.
