DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's tennis team came away with a close 5-4 win at home against Virginia Wesleyan University at the Averett Tennis Courts on Sunday.
Averett (4-0) remained undefeated on the season in part due to its strong showing in doubles play, winning all three matches to start things off with a 3-0 lead over Virginia Wesleyan (0-3). At No. 1 doubles, freshman Jorge Figueroa and junior Stan Martherus earned an 8-6 win, while junior Thomas Woodcock and freshman Evgeniy Bogdasaryan grabbed an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles. Then at No. 3 doubles, junior Simon Levinsson and sophomore Fabian Howding slipped away with a tight 8-7 (2) win to close things out with the doubles sweep for the Cougars.
In singles play, Figueroa came up big with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 1 spot. Bogdasaryan then sealed the match for the Cougars with a 6-4, 6-4 win in No. 5 singles.
Averett returns to action when it hosts Guilford College for a home match on March 8 at 2:30 p.m.
