DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University Director of Athletics Communications
Drew Wilson welcomed
Heath Barringer to his team as an assistant sports information director on Monday.
A native of Salisbury, North Carolina, Barringer attended Wingate University, where he played football for three years. Following those years with the football program, he moved to the booth to be the analyst for Wingate football games, which were broadcasted on ESPN3. That began a yearlong internship with Wingate's athletics communications team, where he worked with social media, statting, game day operations and also baseball and softball play by play. Also during Barringer's senior year, he worked an internship with 99.1 WDZD where he traveled with Monroe High School's football team to broadcast all their games on the radio. His first on-air experience came back in 2018 when he did play by play for the Division III NCAA baseball regional hosted by William Peace University.
Barringer is no stranger to Averett. His older sister Nicole played volleyball for the Cougars for four seasons, served as an assistant coach for two seasons and is a member of the Averett Athletics 2020 Hall of Fame class.
Barringer graduated from Wingate in May 2020 with a bachelor's degree in communications with a concentration on sports broadcasting. While at Averett, Barringer is pursuing his master's degree in business administration with a leadership concentration.
