Meredith outlasts Cougars in USA South women's basketball clash

DANVILLE, Va. — Despite career outputs by junior's Camryn Lunsford, Rana Davis-Robinson and freshmen Demi Case and Shunte Bethea. A late fourth quarter surge pushed Meredith College past Averett University women's basketball by the final of 73-59 in USA South Conference action on Friday evening at the Grant Center.

Averett (0-3, 0-3 USA South) entered the fourth quarter trailing 48-39, but an 11-4 run aided by a deep 3-pointer from Case saw Friday's conference clash tied 52-52 with just over six minutes remaining.

Meredith (3-0, 3-0 USA South) benefited from a strong fourth quarter showing from Kimberly Schuh who added back-to-back-to-back baskets to push the Avenging Angels advantage back to 58-52, but Lunsford cut back into the deficit with three of her career-high 24 points to pull within 58-55.

However, Schuh proved too much down the stretch for the Cougars as she poured in 14 of her 18 points on the evening in the fourth quarter to increase Meredith's edge to double-digits late.

The Avenging Angels and Cougars opened Friday's meeting trading baskets back-and-forth through the opening quarter, with Meredith maintaining a 21-16 lead heading into the second quarter. Aided by a strong opening quarter from reigning USA South Conference Freshman of the Year Kate Perko, who finished with a game-high 33 points and 20 rebounds.

Meredith held on to a slight 14-12 second quarter edge to hold a 35-28 advantage heading into the break.

Averett pulled within 42-28 of the Avenging Angels midway through the third quarter, but Perko added baskets late in the quarter to help push the deficit to 48-39 heading into the final quarter.

Lunsford's team-high 24-point showing, topped a previous career-high set against William Peace University last Sunday, while Davis-Robinson added an impressive career-high 11 points off the bench for the Cougars.

Additionally, Case and Bethea contributed career-high 10-point performances, while Lunsford collected a game-high five steals and freshman Jihnez Hutchinson pulled down a career-high six rebounds.

Averett returns to the hardwood on Sunday when it travels to Raleigh, North Carolina, for a 2 p.m. meeting with Meredith.
