RALEIGH, N.C. — The Averett University women's basketball program fell to conference foe Meredith College 56-47 despite a career day from freshman
Shunte Bethea. A major swing in the second quarter proved to be the difference and gave Meredith the momentum to push by the Cougars on Sunday afternoon in Weatherspoon Gym.
Averett (0-4, 0-4 USA South) entered the second quarter all tied up 9-9 but got outscored 14-7 that quarter and went to halftime down seven. Meredith (4-0, 4-0 USA South) benefited from a strong outing from Kimberly Schuh, who had 27 points and 15 rebounds to push the Avenging Angels to their fourth straight victory despite the career day for Bethea, who had a career-best 19 points and a career-high eight rebounds while shooting 8-for-14 from the field.
Meredith and Averett matched runs from each other to end the third quarter after the Cougars went on a 9-0 run fueled by a 3-pointer from junior
Courtney Hunt. The Avenging Angels then followed this run with a 9-2 stretch of their own taking an eight-point lead into the fourth.
Averett pulled within six of the Avenging Angels with 3:24 left in the fourth quarter after another 3-pointer by Hunt, who had 13 points shooting 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. However, Schuh added baskets late to help give Meredith the nine-point victory.
Junior
Camryn Lunsford added 10 points with five rebounds and four assists for the Cougars.
Averett returns to the court on Friday when it travels to Fayetteville, North Carolina, for a 7:30 p.m. meeting with Methodist.
