COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Averett University wrestling team picked up a pair of dominating victories over Huntingdon College and Division II Allen University by finals of 39-10 and 38-12, respectively, in dual action on Sunday to stay unbeaten on the season.
Â
Huntingdon Dual:
Â
Senior
Sam Braswell pushed the Cougars out to an early 5-0 advantage with a 21-5 tech fall victory over Loki Ryan, giving the All-American and perfect record on the year, while junior
Joseph Jones fought his way to an impressive 6-5 win by decision to increase the advantage to 8-0.
Â
Averett (4-0) benefited from back-to-back tech fall victories by senior
Brandon Woody and junior
Tony Blackman to take a commanding 18-0 edge. Woody's 21-5 victory helped the senior remain unbeaten on the year, while Blackman cruised to a 21-3 second period tech fall win.Â
Â
Huntingdon (1-1) got on the board with a pin over sophomore
Landon Childress, but freshman
Alex Turley continued his incredibly strong start with a :23 second victory by pin to increase the Cougars lead to 24-3.Â
Â
Sophomore
George Moseley put the Cougars up 30-3 with a first round pin, while junior
Nasser McCummings put together an impressive 10-7 win by decision at the 184-pound weight class.
Â
The Hawks added their final points of the afternoon with a 12-2 major decision win over sophomore
Billy Baldwin, however, sophomore
Trent Ragland capped off the Cougars opening dual victory with a first period pin over Joseph Pearson.
Â
In exhibition action freshman
Austin Long lost 7-1 by decision to Tyler Tanaka, while fellow freshman
Kyle Sanders picked up his second win on the year with a 17-2 tech fall victory over Derrick Lancero.Â
Â
Freshman
Tommy Baldwin picked up a 12-2 major decision victory over Jacob Smith, but freshman
Jeremiah Bynem lost by pin in the 174-pound weight class.Â
Â
The Cougars would win their final two matches against Huntingdon as freshman
Zion Carpenter upset Hawk's starter Jack Haury with a 14-8 decision and
Kowan Lee added another upset with a 3-2 victory over starter Joseph Pearson.Â
Â
Allen Dual:
Â
Braswell continued his perfect season with a second period pin over Allen's Justin Kelly to put the Cougars up early 6-0.
Â
Allen (0-2) benefitted from a disqualification at the 133-pound weight class as Jones was up by 14 points with time left to earn a tech fall victory, but the sophomore was surprisingly disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct that resulted in six points for the Yellow Jackets and another point that was subtracted from the Cougars overall score, following another unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to give Allen a 6-5 advantage.Â
Â
Woody gave Averett back an 11-6 advantage with a :30 second pin over Drevon Wallace to continue his unbeaten streak, but the Yellow Jackets inched closer with a 5-4 victory by decision over Blackman to pull within 11-9.
Â
Childress's hard-fought 7-6 win at the 157-pound weight class proved to be the pivoting points in Sunday's clash as it put Averett back up 14-9 giving way to Turley who turned Moise Toussainc to his back in :17 seconds for his second victory by pin on the afternoon that gave the Cougars a 20-9 edge.
Â
Moseley aided Averett's scoring with a first period pin, his second decision by pin on the afternoon, giving Averett a 26-9 lead, but Allen broke the Cougars scoring streak with a 3-1 victory over junior
John Bishop to pull within 26-12.
Â
Averett rolled off back-to-back pins to ice the match in its final two weight classes and walk away with a 38-12Â victory. Beginning when
Billy Baldwin added a first period fall, while Ragland contributed his second decision by fall.
Â
Long got back into the win column in exhibition action following a 10-3 victory over Reco Robinson, while Sanders pinned Chance Carter in :37 seconds for his second win on the afternoon.Â
Â
Thomas Baldwin earned a victory by disqualification against Wayne Taylor, while freshman
Cleon Lawton tallied an 18-4 major decision win over Nequel Martin.Â
Â
Freshman
James Henry capped off Averett's impressive afternoon with an 8-3 victory over Christian Poplous to remain unbeaten in exhibition bouts against Allen.Â
Â
With their victories on Sunday the Cougars have now scored 35 or more points in all four of their matches on the year and Turley has still won every match by pin on the year.
Â
Averett returns to the mat on Wednesday when it competes in the King University Tri against Lander University, Emmanuel College and King beginning at 4 p.m. in Bristol, Tennessee.Â
