EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. — Averett University men's wrestling opened its 2026-27 season at the East Stroudsburg University Open on Sunday. The Cougars finished the tournament with three placers and a fifth place team finish out of 25 teams.

Junior Luke Zadrazil led Averett with a fourth-place finish in the 157-pound weight class. Zadrazil advanced to the semifinals after collecting three victories in the opening rounds, including two decisions and a pin. After falling by technical fall in the semifinals, Zadrazil competed in the third-place match, where he fell by pin at 1:39 to finish fourth.

Senior Carter Shupert earned a fifth-place finish in the 165-pound weight class. Shupert opened the tournament with a pin at 0:36 before dropping his second match by decision, 9-5. He responded with three consecutive victories, including two pins and a 15-2 major decision, before securing fifth place with a 10-4 decision in the placement match.

Senior A.J. Orlando rounded out the Cougars' placers with a sixth-place finish in the 133-pound weight class. After dropping his opening match by technical fall, Orlando battled back with three consecutive victories, including two pins and a technical fall. He advanced to the fifth-place match before falling by pin at 1:41 to finish sixth.

Averett's next scheduled action is its annual Cougar Open at the Grant Center in Danville, Sunday, Nov. 8. Start time is set for 9 a.m.
