FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Averett University women's basketball program earned its first victory of the season over Methodist University 58-42 on Friday night in the Riddle Center. The Cougars went on an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter, which proved to be the difference for the Cougars.
Averett (1-4, 1-4 USA South) entered the final quarter of play with a three-point advantage before heating up and going on an 11-0 run from the 9:07 mark until 2:55 remaining in the game. The Cougars were led by veterans
Camryn Lunsford and
Genesis Weiters, who combined for 33 points.
Methodist (0-3, 0-3 USA South) headed into halftime with a six-point led but saw that lead quickly vanish in the third as Averett went on a 6-0 run. The Monarchs were led by Aniyah Tate who had 12 points and four points.
The teams were all knotted up at 13-13 at the end of the first quarter, which proved to be the only tie of the game. After the Cougars took the lead from a Weiters layup with 5:07 remaining in the third, they never looked back and held onto the lead for the remainder of the game.
Lunsford had 16 points with seven rebounds and three assists. Weiters led all scorers with 17 points and five rebounds. Freshman
Shunte Bethea added seven points and six rebounds.
Averett returns to the court on Saturday night when it hosts Methodist for a 7:30 p.m.. matchup. That game was moved up from the originally scheduled date of Sunday because of the threat of wintry weather expected to fall in the Danville region.
