DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball swept Salem College 3-0 for a conference victory on Tuesday night at the Grant Center. The Cougars won 25-16, 15-14 and 25-19.
After getting off to a slow start in the opening set, Averett (14-5, 6-3 USA South) found its footing midway through the set. Tied 15-15, Averett took its first lead at 16-15 and only allowed one point the rest of the way. The Cougars pulled away midway through the second set as well to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Averett finished off Salem (0-12, 0-6 USA South) in the third frame to seal the win.

Jessica Beam and sophomore
Emma Nash each led Averett with seven kills, with senior
Sarah Shropshire and junior Morgan Barmes tallying six kills each. Sophomore
Erin Gray had a team-high 13 digs for Averett, which also got nine digs from junior
Lauren Montren and eight digs from senior
Devin Lassiter. Sophomore
Makkenzie Compton had 22 assists, with freshman
Kinsley Stevens making 18 assists.
The match was originally slated for Oct. 1 during a tri-match at William Peace University. However, Salem was unable to play and the match was rescheduled for Tuesday in Danville.
Averett returns to action on Wednesday at home against Mary Baldwin University at 7 p.m.
