STAUNTON, Va. — The Averett University men's soccer team rolled Mary Baldwin University 4-1 on Wednesday in USA South Conference mid-week soccer action.
Averett (6-6-1, 2-1-1 USA South) scored in the fifth minute when senior Lluc Pou played a pass from sophomore
Rion Klaas that he lifted in the air near the 18-yard box that sailed over the Fighting Squirrels goalkeeper for an early 1-0 lead.
Sophomore
Agustin Jaraba increased that advantage to 2-0 with a strike from outside the 18-yard box, playing a pass from senior
Ezequiel Marquez that deflected off a Mary Baldwin (4-8-1, 1-3 USA South) defender that also beat the goaltender high.
Freshman
Ethan Sternberg recorded his first collegiate goal to make it 3-0 before the half as he was tripped up running into the box that resulted in a penalty kick opportunity that the forward put to the back of the net.
The Cougars wasted no time in the second half to open up the deficit to 4-0, when freshman
Orion Mills scored his second collegiate goal in as many games off an assist by senior
Ty Michelsen.
Mary Baldwin got on the board in the 78th minute to pull within 4-1, but the damage had been done early as Jaraba's team-leading sixth goal proved to be the game winner, while Klaas increased his team lead with assists to five.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday when they host Methodist University for senior day at 4:30 p.m. on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium
