DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball held off Bridgewater College 3-1 for a non-conference victory Friday night in the Grant Center for its fourth win in a row.
Averett (16-5) won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-22 over Bridgewater (9-9). However, the Eagles eked out a 25-23 win in Set 3 to stay alive and force a fourth frame. Averett opened the fourth set with a 6-0 lead and held on 25-21 to seal the victory.
Junior
Lauren Montren's double-double of 12 kills and 16 digs lead Averett in both categories, with junior
Jessica Beam added 11 kills. Junior
Morgan Barnes and sophomore
Emma Nash both finished with nine kills apiece. Sophomore
Erin Gray totaled 13 kills, freshman
Carlie Deason had 14 kills and sophomore
Makkenzie Compton had a team-best 27 assists for the Cougars, who also got a double-double of 20 assists and 10 digs from freshman
Kinsley Stevens. Senior
Zamyiah Mangum, who had eight kills as well, had a team-high five service aces.
Averett nearly ended the match in three sets despite a slow start in Set 3. The Cougars overcame a 9-2 deficit at the start of the set to tie it 11-11. A tightly contested match the rest of the way, Averett inched ahead 23-22 before Bridgewater won the next three points.
Averett travels to Fayetteville, North Carolina, on Saturday for a USA South Conference tri-match hosted by Methodist Univeristy. Averett faces the Monarchs at noon and plays Pfeiffer University at 2 p.m.
